Agya Koo Nimo, also known as Kwabena Boa-Amponsem, is a Highlife musician. He worked in a variety of research and medical-related positions while continuing to pursue his passion for music.

Prior to his talents, when he wasn’t in school; he was teaching brass band music, drumming, and the guitar in his village at the age of 19.

In 1957, when the former British colony of the Gold Coast became the independent country of Ghana, Agya Koo Nimo first received national acclaim through the formation of the Addadam Agofomma ensemble.

Almost all of his songs reflect traditional stories, performed in the Twi language. Along with one or two guitars and also vocals.


Koo Nimo was born on 3 October 1934 (86 years) in the village of Foase, in the Atwima District of the Ashanti Region in Ghana, West Africa.

He grew up as part of the royal family of Ghana as his sister married the king while he learned to play the traditional red and black kete drums of the royal ensembles. Osabarima, a compact album featuring eight of Koo’s songs, was originally published in 1990.

That’s the first time a Ghanaian artist’s work was released on CD. Andrew L. Kaye received a Doctor of Philosophy degree for his dissertation, “Koo Nimo and His Circle.

A Ghanaian Musician in Ethnomusicological Perspective,” which he presented in January 1992 at Columbia University in New York, USA.

He worked as a Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, for two years before moving to Ann Arbor to work at the University of Michigan.

In 2006, Agya Koo Nimo moved back to Ghana, to the city of Kumasi. He performed music, discussing his music, and enjoying a lunch of stewed greater cane rat with host Anthony Bourdain in a January 2007 episode of the American travel show Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

His father was Kwame Amponsah and his mother Akua Fokuo who according to him lived exemplary lives for me to emulate. To him, his family became his biggest fans and critics and gave me the energy to pursue a dream with a guitar.

In 1979, in recognition of his services to Ghanaian music as performer, teacher, and administrator; Agya Koo Nimo was elected President of MUSIGA (the Musicians’ Union of Ghana). His countrymen appreciated not only his music but his love and respect for tradition.

Agya Koo Nimo became the interim chairman of COSGA, Ghana’s Copyright Society, in 1985. Following this, he received an honorary life member of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music, along with such distinguished names as Professor J. H. K. Nketia and John Collins.

In February 1991, in recognition of his services to music and to his country, Koo received the prestigious Asanteman award from the Asantehene. Similarly in March, he received the Flagstar Award from ECRAG (Entertainment Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana). In 1991, he was invited to serve on the National Folklore Board of Trustees.

Also in March 1997, the Ghana government celebrated the 40th anniversary of independence by awarding gold medals to forty of its distinguished citizens, one of whom was Koo Nimo.

This was in recognition of his efforts to preserve traditional culture. Due to his hard work, he received the Konkoma Award for his contribution to Ghanaian Highlife Music.
