Robert Mensah was born on 12th June 1939 in the Gold Coast now Ghana. He was a footballer who played as a goalkeeper. As a young player, he was best known for his exploits at  Asante Kotoko F.C where he won the Africa Clubs Cup in 1970.

He was controversial and likewise mocked opposition players when they lose a game. Mensah was among the squad that represented Ghana in the 1967 Africa Cup Of Nations. He also represented Ghana at the 1968 summer Olympics.

He was often seen wearing cups during games. Most of the time, his colleges will be forced to remove the cup claiming it is juju. The habit of wearing a cup earned him a Nicki “Yashim” In homage to the Russian goalkeeper ” Lev Yashim” who also wore a cup during games.


Robert Mensah was born on 12 June 1939 before his death the Ghanaian Footballer was 32 years old.

Early Career

Robert Mensah started his early football playing for Mysterious Dwarfs and made an appearance of 150 games as a goalkeeper. In 1962, he joined Sekondi Independence Club. In 1964, he joined Asante Kotoko FC .

He later moved to Tema Textiles Printing before coming back to Kotoko FC during which he won the Africa Clubs Cup in 1970.

Robert Mensah Cause of Death

Mensah was stabbed to death with a broken bottle after an altercation in an akpeteshie bar in Tema community 7. He died a day later at the hospital following the doctors’ inability to perform surgery due to light out. He died at age 32.

Three men were arrested by the Ghana police following the death. Issac Melfah a 31-year-old electrician was reported to have been the perpetrator. He was taken to prison for some time and was later freed for a not an intentional act.

He could not stay in Ghana but moved to Settle in Nigeria. Melfa was later reported to have died in a car knocked and was buried in Nigeria. Robert Mensah cause of death was a tragic incident that made waves nationwide.

Robert Mensah Sports Stadium

A sports Stadium in Cape Coast has been named in his honour. The Stadium is the home venue of Mysterious Dwarfs, the team with which he began his football career with.

In 1972, a folk song was released titled ” ROBERT MENSAH goalkeeper No.1″. The song was aimed at condemning drinking.

Reaction To Robert Mensah’S Death

Many people reacted to Robert Mensah death, whiles others praise him for his wonderful goalkeeping, others talked about his controversial nature despite his Goalkeeping talent. One of his international playmates Ibrahim Sunday once said Robert died out of his careless manner.

Robert Mensah died fifty (50) years ago but his memories still leaves on till now. Till we meet again in heaven we say MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PERFECT PEACE.
